Stafford Mens: Joeys Go Back To Back
Stafford Mens team Joeys have won their second consecutive title for the first time in the side’s history, discarding of P-Dub in the final on Wednesday.
In honour of the late Joe King and lead by captain Ben Hayes, the boys in purple came out motivated and eager to prove a point after finishing second during the fixture rounds.
Player of the match Dave Webster proved the difference with two tries and a clutch try assist to guide his side to victory.
Mens top try scorer Corey Pocock got his team on the board first with a trademark short grubber to beat P-Dub’s sliding middle defence.
Jason West capitalised on their next possession with a kick of his own to touch down.
A shell-shocked P-Dub outfit managed to get on the board after forcing two repeat sets and wrestling back momentum.
On the back of possession, North Brisbane Shark Jack Woodbridge sliced through some would-be defence for his team’s first points.
The joy was short-lived with Dave Webster collecting the first of his two tries, scooting down the sideline to score in the corner.
Sam Collins hit back shortly after, pouring through gaping hole down the left edge.
It was an unwanted halftime break with the Padua Old Boys looking dangerous to close out the half. Joeys lead 3-2.
P-Dub opened the scoring on their second possession with Sam Gadsby creating a 3-on-2 for Matt O’Brien to kick and score.
A ruck infringement gifted Joeys great field position and was capped off by an outstanding inside ball from Dave Webster to Matthew Allen on the last touch.
Leading mixed try scorer Mason Hasselmeyer would extend Joey’s lead three minutes later, crashing over from short range.
Against the run of play, Jack Woodbridge showcased his blistering speed down the sideline to bring the scores to within two points.
A number of errors and repeat sets saw Dave Webster cross for his second, while Amit Larioya continued the trend of scoring in finals matches to blow Joey’s lead out to 7-4.
P-Dub’s Sam Collins skipped over for a late consolation try off a crisp short ball from captain Joe Warren in the first four minutes.
Joeys would hang on for their second consecutive Stafford Mens championship. Well done boys!
