Slappers, P-Dub Score Stafford Spring Success 1

Slappers, P-Dub Score Stafford Spring Success

Slappers have broken a six year drought with a hard-fort 3-2 win over Larrikins on Wednesday night.

The victory is Slappers ;first grand final win since going back-to-back at Taringa in 2014.

After knocking off summer & winter champions Ballerz in the semi-final, Slappers lead by Jason West went into the match as slight favourites.

The greasy conditions flipped the (match) script and turned the game into a slug-fest; a style suited to grand final newcomers Larrikins.

It was Kristian Wanka who crossed off a probing inside ball from Nathan McCarthy to give Larrikins’ the first points.

Slappers’ leading try scorer Angus Webster (10) hit back swiftly with a try of his own to bring the scores level within the first five minutes.

A clunky attack featuring a handful of representative players slowly started to click as Slappers began to ruck the ball direct to win the field possession battle.

Larrikins’ rock-solid middle defence and captain Lilia Kurtz’s efforts as a short sweeping fullback turned several Slappers’ attacking raids away.

In a six minute period at the back end of the half, Larrikins touched the ball twice as Slappers piled on the pressure.

The breakthrough came from a ruck and split by Tristian Bell-Blissner to Chloe Storm in the corner. Slappers took a 3-1 at the break.

An upbeat halftime speech ensued as both teams performed well laid down the law.

Larrikins | Stafford Spring Season Slappers

The possession count was bound to even up and with it, the opportunities for Larrikins who had been starved of the ball.

Right one cue, in the first five minutes, Larrikins capitalised on three repeat sets with try assist leader Lachlan Marah slicing through the Slappers’ middle defence.

The match was poised for a grandstand finish but what played out was a throwback to the original days of Kick It with plenty of defence and limited points.

Some monumental efforts in defence from the Slappers middle men in Matthew Allen, Jason West, Kelvin Northey and Dan Ebert helped nullify a boosted Larrikins’ attack.

On the flip side, on the rare occasions Slappers got into position for an attacking raids it was Kristian Wanka, Nic Palmer and Steve McCormack who turned them away.

As time slipped away, it was the middle men who helped dry up the points.

Well done to Slappers on the victory.

Slappers (3): Angus Webster, Chloe Storm
Larrikins (2): Kristian Wanka, Lachlan Marsh
Player of the match: Matthew Allen
Best and Fairest: Kristian Wanka

No subs, no worries for P-Dub.

P-Dub

P-Dub made it two from two post-COVID with a red-hot 6-3 win over rivals LGM’s in the Stafford mens final.

The achievement marks the eighth time P-Dub has won a mens grand final – the most of any mens team in Kick It history.

LGM’s took the field boasting ten of eleven players on their team list, while their opponent made up the numbers with just seven.

The boys in purple capitalised on the back of their first sub rotation through Dean Saxvik who nabbed a short grubber.

As the game started to settle and P-Dub got into their rucking sequence, they produced the first repeat set of the game.

Long standing player Jarrod Clayton took advantage by kicking through a gap in the defence to level the scores.

The momentum firmly with the champs, they maintained field possession for much of the first half.

Rep star Matt O’Brien sent Brenton Biddle over for P-Dub’s second after a mountain of possession.

While LGM’s had their opportunity in attack, their end of set options came up short.

Luke Murray grubbered an unlikely 20/10 to continue to pour on the pressure for his opponent.

Clayton scooted through some tired middle defence his second and push the score out to 3-1.

A clearly shell-shocked LGM’s outfit began to throw it around as their quicker man started to come into the game.

A pin-point 20/10 from captain Jackson Patton put his side in great field position and snapped-back momentum.

LGM's | Stafford Spring Season Slappers

Line breaks to Billy Robertson and Jesse Ripley paid off with the latter claiming LGM’s second try with minutes remaining in the second half.

Brayden Barrett was gifted his side’s third try with a botched catch off the kick-off from Matt O’Brien to level up the scores at halftime.

A simple game followed with both teams looking to create the extra man round the ruck.

P-Dub kept things narrow and simple no subs, while LGM’s looked a little tentative at times as they failed to capitalise on some fatigued defenders.

LGMs were the first team to defend repeat sets on the goal line and P-Dub’s Sam Gadsby made them pay with a short kick through a gaping hole.

The momentum firmly with the hosts as Gadsby notched up his second in quick time to extend his side’s lead to 5-3.

With the slippery conditions, fatigue was also evident as the ball movement from both teams appeared restricted.

A rare spread to Bill Chisholm who turned Luke Murray back on the inside clinched P-Dub their third try of the second half and the game.

Well done to P-Dub on their outstanding win.

While LGM’s weren’t at their best, it was a tremendous effort to make the finals for the third time in the last four seasons.

P-Dub: Jarrod Clayton (2), Sam Gadsby (2), Brenton Biddle, Luke Murray
LGM’s: Dean Saxvik, Jesse Ripley, Brayden Barrett
Player of the match: Jarrod Clayton

LIVIN

LIVIN Charity Shield: $2,500 donated, Kickaholics, Shake ‘n’ Bake Claim Wins

Carseldine played host to the fifth annual Kick It LIVIN Charity Shield a fortnight ago.

An event series that has been built around creating awareness mental health and depression did not disappoint with a fantastic turnout to finish the 2020 calendar.

Over 140 players took the field to help raise crucial funds for LIVIN’s LiveWell educational program.

With temperatures well over 30 degrees it took a special effort from the girls in the canteen to cool the players down.

Plenty of ice blocks and drinks went down a treat as all profits from the canteen went towards Diabetes Australia.

When the dust settled and a couple of cold drinks were cracked, we were all able to contribute $2,500 towards LIVIN and mental health.

A tremendous effort from all involved in trying conditions. A special mention goes out to all of our event sponsors who aided with player prizes.

We look forward to the next charity event in 2021.

The Footy

It was a case of survival of the fittest as the warm conditions took a toll on many of the players.

Mens top two LGM’s and The Boods went through the pool rounds undefeated.

The pair looked potent finishing with the best attack and it showed on the try leaderboard.

Jesse Ripley (6) topped the mens try leaderboard, closely followed by teammate Dean Saxvik (5), while The Boods’ Shaun Rees (3) rounded out a prolific top three.

As the old saying goes, offence wins games, defence wins championships.

Third placed and the most inexperienced team in the top four, Livin On A Prayer finished the pool rounds with the best defence – something to hang their hat on at the end of the tournament.

However it was fourth placed Shake ‘n’ Bake that started to simmer as they flew under the radar with the second best defence through the pool rounds.

Boasting a handful of experienced Wednesday players, plus the addition of Gerard Beale and Kodi Nikorima, the grace period was over come finals.

A semi final blitz of an under-fire LGMs side delivered a comprehensive 9-0 win in the semi finals.

Nikorima equated for three assists, while Beale and David Cumming crossed for two tries each as the zippy middles tore apart LGM’s defence.

There is only so many opportunities to go up against these key figures and the boys from LGM’s will no doubt cherish the moment.

With The Boods pipping Livin On A Prayer 4-2 in the other mens semi final, it set up a classic final match.

Shake ‘n’ Bake came out locked and loaded with quick tries to Trent Gossner and Don Grahame before Ezra crossed for The Boods’ first in the 11th minute.

Bake’s main man Nikorima set up Don Grahame for his second try before Gerard Beale extended the lead to 4-1 shortly after.

A late try to Rhikki off a Caleb Holland short ball provided some late game highlights, however the result was well and truely sealed.

On the mixed side of the competition Woof, Rampage and Mystics 2.0 all finished on three wins.

For the fourth spot in the finals, Kickaholics and Nek Set scrapped it out with the former getting through on for and against.

In perhaps the most even final four to date, it was Woof and Mystics 2.0 who finished with the best attack. Woof also concluded the fixtures with the best defence.

Third place Rampage and Kickaholics remained unsettled for much of the day through injuries and late outs.

The final round of pool games repeated with Rampage going toe-to-toe with Mystics in the first semi final.

The result on this occasion was reversed with Mystics notching up a 3-2 win after losing the pool match on the final siren 4-3.

Kickaholics went one better than their pool round draw against Woof with a controversial 4-3 win over their rivals.

Fresh off their mixed victory at Taringa, Kickaholics were looking to make it two grand final wins within a week.

Long serving Charity Event team The Mystics who also boasted Beale and Nikorima reached their first grand final in five attempts.

Kickaholics got on the board first through Jared Lane before Peter King levelled up the score with a quick reply..

Beale extended Mystics’ lead shortly after with a perfectly weighted grubber.

An unlikely try on the stroke of halftime to Freddie Pipe who converted a 45m intercept opened up the game at 3-1.

The second half produced a number of end to end efforts with Kickaholics’ Trent Gossner the only beneficiary as he scooted down the wing in the 28th minute.

Some end-to-end rucking through the middle third was a staple with field possession key.

As fatigue and errors began to creep into the game, a rare spread to Eliza Mooney yielded the match winner as she put Mariah Debel over in the dying stages of the second half.

The shackles were released at Mystics began to throw the ball around but came up empty on numerous occasions.

Well done to Kickaholics and Shake n Bake on their grand final wins.

2020 Taringa Spring: Kickaholics, Best Friends Victorious

Kickaholics Anonymous have won their second Taringa mixed title with an emphatic 17-1 win over Free Range Chicken Thunder Godz on Tuesday.

Boasting try-scoring dynamos Corey Pocock, Trent Gossner and Eliza Mooney who accounted for 53 tries in eight fixture matches, they took the field as heavy favourites.

It was a tremendous effort from Free Range Chicken Thunder, who in their first season of Kick it, finished second on the ladder.

The absence of Nick Reilly and Connor Wright; their two leading try scorers proved to be a massive hurdle.

In spite of their absence, they performed well in attack, all-be-it without the polish seen in the fixture rounds.

Kickaholics skipped out to a 5-0 inside 10 minutes on the back of two Eliza Mooney tries and one to Trent Gossner.

The momentum continued through Isaac Mobbs and Mason Hasselmeyer who crossed from close range to extend their side’s lead to 7-0.

Trent Gossner iced a perfect first half with a long range try from his own half as he scooted down the left wing.

Taringa Spring 2020. Free Range Chicken Thunder Godz

It was a much different half time speech for Kickaholics with long-time rivals Next-Gen Untouchables out of the picture.

With the latter playing later in the night, it was a much more relaxed chat this time round.

Corey Pocock and Eliza Mooney got their team on the board early with tries of their own.

The return of Free Range’s Jake Dallas produced arguably the try of the match with a picturesque chip and chase to get his side off the duck-egg.

Kickaholics’ Simon Crowe crossed for his first try in a grand final before Corey Pocock notched up his second and Trent Gossner his third.

Not to be outdone, Eliza Mooney kicked for herself to notch up her fourth try in the dying stages. The effort which included a try assist earned her player of the match honours.

Well done to Kickaholics on their second mixed 1 Taringa grand final win.

Kickaholics 17 – Eliza Mooney (4), Trent Gossner (3), Corey Pocock (2), Isaac Mobbs, Mason Hasselmeyer, Simon Crowe
Free Range Chicken Thunder Godz 1 – Jake Dallas
Player of the Match – Eliza Mooney
Best and Fairest – Jake Dallas.

Best Friends hold off fast-finishing Rampage

Best Friends claimed their first mixed title win with a 7-6 win over the highly-talented Rampage.

With both teams boasting a number of Taringa Rep stars, the stage was set for one of the better mixed 2 finals in recent times.

Lachlan Brennan got Best Friends on the board first followed by teammate Harry Clem.

Rampage Rep star Antony Tatkovic crossed for his first off a Tom Primmer kick

Taringa Spring 2020. Rampage

The Rep theme continued with Best Friends’ Riley Wagner crossing for two tries in quick succession to see his side skip out to a 4-1 lead.

With moment firmly with the players in white, it took a scamper from Tatkovic to notch up his second and ignite some much-needed energy into his side’s attack.

Rampage’s Aiden McGuire crossed from short-range to get within one points at halftime.

As ascendancy was firmly with Rampage following a slow start, Best Friends needed to wrestle back possession and field position early in the second half.

Repeat sets gifted Lachlan Brennan the opportunity to claim his second try and get his side on the board first in the second half.

As Rampage reverted to default – a heavy dose of rucking, Aiden McGuire nabbed his second try shortly after with a spilt on the goal line.

With the scoreboard poised at 5-4 in favour of Best Friends, the match was set up for an outstanding finish.

It took lull of 8-minutes however Lachlan Brennan broke the shackles with a kick to himself.

Riley Wagner repeated the effort just minutes later to bust open the game at 7-4.

A visibly frantic and irked Rampage side began to pull the trigger with the ball in hand only to come up empty.

Sheer weight of possession saw Antony Tatkovic zip down the right touch line off a Clancy Tickner ball.

Tatkovic made a 50m break on the next possession only to be run down by Harry Clem in what was the play of the game.

A late try on the buzzer to Clancy Tickner was all in vain as time expired.

Well done to Best Friends on their grand final win in potentially their last season of Kick It.

Best Friends 7 – Lachlan Brennan (3), Riley Wagner (3), Harry Clem
Rampage 6 – Antony Tatkovic (3), Aiden McGuire (2), Clancy Tickner
Player of the Match – Lachlan Brennan (4 tries, 1 assist)
Best and Fairest – Tom Primmer (3 assists)

Futuristic-Untouchables pip Makin’ It Rein in overtime.

Taringa Spring 2020. Next-Gen Untouchables

It wouldn’t be a Taringa grand final night with Next-Gen Untouchables not featuring in a finals match – this time in the third mixed grand final.

The former mixed 1 champions fell from grace with a laundry list of injuries to key players leaving them with a team unrecognisable from past seasons.

Meanwhile, Makin’ It Rein made a successful return to Taringa after a year off. The crew led by Scott Fryer finished in ninth after a pleasing season.

The only experienced Untouchables in Tim Christie, Luke Dudgell and Anthony Martin were the difference as the trio piled on six tries and two assists, including the overtime match winner to Christie.

Ladies top try scorer Eliza Mooney crossed for two tries, including the try to send the match to golden point. Jarad Neinert also crossed for two as he took home Best and Fairest honours.

Well done to Next-Gen Untouchables on their win.

Next-Gen Untouchables 7 – Tim Christie (4), Luke Dudgell, Anthony Martin, Anthony Whittle
Makin’ It Rein 6 – Jarad Neinert (2), Eliza Mooney (2)

Congrats to our Taringa LIVIN try leaders Corey Pocock (22) and Eliza Mooney (14)

A special mention to Eliza who also finished with 12 assists beating the previous record of 9 assists set by Jess Sleep in 2019.
