Ballerz, LGMs Sublime in Stafford Spring

LGMs have captured their first Stafford Mens premiership with an enthralling 4-1 victory over Beer Pressure on Wednesday night.

The win capped off an outstanding 2019 with LGMs finishing on top of the mens table in consecutive seasons.

Guarded by plenty of friends and family, the boys in purple took the field with a point to prove after being bundled out of last season’s semi-final in straight sets by summer champions P-Dub.

They didn’t have to wait long with LGM’s captain Jackson Paton pouncing on a short grubber to give his side their first points.

With scoreboard pressure applied, it was Beer Pressure who was able to wrestle back the momentum.

It was the same methodology that defeated autumn and winter mens champions Joeys in last week’s semi final.

A trademark backline move inside their opponents’ 15m came up with the goods with Luke Whitney crossing untouched in the corner.

Not through lack of trying, as each team had a flurry of try scoring chances and near misses.

Past and present Rep stars Will O’Keefe, Shaun O’Keefe, Jessie Ripley and Jackson Paton all lead the charge however came up empty handed at the break.

The halftime team chat to start fast and score first worked for one team.

It took just 30 seconds for LGMs to post the first points of the second half and it came through Jesse Ripley.

The North Brisbane Sharks speedster grabbed a short kick-off, before evading three men to score.

In trying conditions and with a gusty breeze, short kick-offs and high kicks where the order of the game, however second attempt by Jackson Paton failed to reap the rewards of the opening kick.

Despite this, the momentum was well and truely with LGMs as the boys were strong without the ball, generating superb line speed and regularly rolling subs.

Best and Fairest Will O’Keefe looked most likely with his side’s only two line breaks of the second half.

But it was Jesse Ripley who made a line break of his own to score his second and extend his side’s lead to 3-1 with 10 minutes to go.

Billy Robertson put the icing on the cake minutes later with a great solo try to seal the impressive victory.

A special mention to Corey Pocock who has won the mens top try scorer award for the third consecutive season. During this time he has amassed 54 tries, the most of any mens player in a calendar year.

Eliza Mooney has also gone back-to-back with the mixed womens top try scorer award. Over the past two seasons she has tallied 30 tries.

Adriano Gaile comes away with his first top try scorer honour, equating for 27% of Ballerz’ tries this season.

Ballerz have reclaimed the division one mixed title in a hard fought 6-2 win over winter champions Too Out Of Touch.

The victory marks the second time in three seasons Ballerz have taken home the top mixed honour and the fifth time in six matches they have defeated their rival.

Two of the most evenly matched mixed teams did not disappoint early with some quality end to end footy.

Sharks Rep player Brayden Barrett proved the difference as he ran in three tries and set up another in a dominant player of the match performance.

But, It was Too Out Of Touch who would strike first off the boot of Isaac Toohey to send Hayden Evans across in the corner.

Two possessions later, Ballerz stuck with Brayden Barrett slicing through some feeble defence off a Zac Jane pass to draw the scores level.

A carbon copy of the first try ensured with Brayden once again doing the leg work before handing the ball off to Jess Sleep for a two point try before the break.

The halftime message from both teams was clear, defence.

The opening five minutes were rock solid by both teams as a stalemate ensured.

Cometh the hour, cometh the man – it was Brayden Barrett who would split the Too Out Of Touch defence a third time and cross for his second try.

A series of close tries by Eliza Mooney, Isaac Toohey and Chris Honnery went begging as Ballerz communicated well when defending inside their own 10 metres.

Jake Coolwell put the nail into the coffin moments later with a trademark chip over the top of the defence for Brayden Barrett to grab and race away for this third.

Matt Genero finally broke through with a short kick of his own to bring the scores to 5-2 before Coolwell scooted away to ice the game.

Congratulations to our Range Brewing try assist champions Joe Warren and Jake Coolwell.

This is the second consecutive season Jake has topped the mixed assist leaderboard. He has nabbed 27 assists over the past two seasons.

He sits a top the most try assists in the mixed competition in 2019 with 33.

One Kick Wonders have taken out the Stafford mixed division two with a gripping 7-5 win over Soup A-Stars.

The game plan for Soup A-Stars was simple, limit Corey Pocock.

One Kick Wonders’ captain scored 26 tries in eight fixture matches to lead his team to a blemish-free record throughout the fixture rounds.

In the final, he did not disappoint with three tries, two of whom were from long range as he showcased his stellar speed.

Two quick tries put his team on the board early with a third to Allan Hebbard off a Matt Beard short ball.

Soup A-Stars hit back shortly after with a nifty grubber from Ryan Rose to give his side their first points

Mason Hasselmeyer replied in kind to extend One Kick Wonders’ the lead to 4-1 moments before halftime.

The opening five minutes started much the same as the first half with Steven Cox breaking the line and racing away for his first try.

Soup A-Stars captain Cam Webb zipped around some would-be goal line defence to post the first points of the second half.

Rob Hunt sent Ryan Rose over for his second try as they wrestled momentum from One Kick Wonders.

An ultra-quick reply from Corey Pocock saw the Representative ace score his third to break the hearts of his opponent.

Mason Hasselmeyer crossed for this second shortly after by scooting through some fragile edge defence.

Amanda Chilcott crossed for a late consolation try after chasing her own kick.

Taringa Spring: Kick It Or Die Tryin, Next-Gen Untouchables Triumph!

Kick It Or Die Tryin’ have taken out the Taringa Spring Division Two mixed competition with a heart-stopping 4-3 victory over New Kicks On The Block.

In their maiden season, the newcomers were aided by some brilliant performances from captain Anthony Barsha and William Read.

It didn’t take long for Kick It Or Die Tryin’ to post their first points and overcome an experienced New Kicks side boasting a handful of representative players.

Two outstanding sets in attack were capped off by an Anthony Barsha line break and grubber to account for his side’s first points within the opening three minutes.

Will Read stamped home an emphatic start to the match by pouncing on a short kick from Tom Rochee to give his team a 2-0 lead.

New Kicks forced their way back into the game after a multitude of repeat sets.

Tigers Rep players Liam Sue and Ben Stevens crossed in quick succession to keep the scores locked up at halftime.

An enthusiastic Kick It or Die Tryin’ side marched onto the field and were rewarded immediately through their captain who crossed for his second.

Barsha’s squad struggled to hold onto the momentum with New Kicks dominating possession from then on in.

The team in black forced six repeat sets on their opposition goal line only to come up empty.

Near misses by John Kerr, Joel Pham and Liam Sue kept their side scoreless in the second half.

Kick It Or Die Trying sealed the win with a late try to Sam Fellows.

Well done on the division 2 victory in your first season!

Next-Gen Untouchables have recaptured the division 1 mixed title after defeating Kickaholics Anonymous 4-3 in a tight final.

With the division 1 crown not in their possession for the first time since the end of 2016, the machine in green had it all to prove against the reigning champions.

The match did not disappoint.

Kickaholics skipped away to an early lead off the boot of Isaac Toohey. He would repeat his effort following a mountain of possession, minutes later to push his side out to a 2-0 lead.

Player of the match Gerard Martin responded, jumping on a short kick to give Untouchables their first points with their first set inside their opponents 10.

His absence together with Matt McIver in last season’s grand final was sorely missed and was the difference early on.

McIver’s boot would help tie the scores with Anthony Martin picking up the scraps on a short grubber into the in-goal.

The game opened up in the dying stages of the first half with either team failing to capitalise. It was a stark contrast to the opening 15 minutes which was played through the middle third and built on defence.

The comparisons from the first half were on show at the start of the second as both teams produced a heavy dose of rucking.

As the middle third of the field copped a battering, territory was not an issue.

It took six sets until Gerard Martin broke the deadlock with a grubber inside the 10 to catch Kickaholics’ defence napping.

As was the theme for the second half, Kickaholics capitalised on a Next-Gen defensive mistake.

On one of the lone times Untouchables failed to play a fullback, Isaac Toohey made them pay with a short grubber to Trent Gossner to bring the scores level.

A series of frantic end-to-end sets ensued as the game clock ticked to within three minutes.

With fatigue on the faces of the players, it was Gerard Martin who came up with the goods to send Lincoln Redgen over with an inside ball to beat a staggered defensive line.

A late opportunity to Kickaholics captain David Sercombe was thwarted by the Untouchables’ main man as Next-Gen returned to the top of the mountain when the clock struck zero.

Well done Next-Gen Untouchables on a fantastic 4-3 division one win.

Titans Sweep 2019 Rep Tournament

Toowoomba Titans have snared the double at the 2019 Kick It Representative Tournament at Taringa on Sunday.

The reigning mens champions cruised to victory, while the Titans mixed side re-claimed the title from the North Brisbane Sharks in their respective finals.

The clean sweep marks the second time the Toowoomba team has taken the honour and the third occasion it has been done in the tournament’s history.

Toowoomba is tipped to host the 2020 tournament following recent success.

Titans mens ran the table once again to claim their third successive mens championship, defeating North Brisbane Sharks in a hotly contested final.

Representative player Beau Hess was once again the star scoring twice and saving just as many as the Titans ran in five tries to one.

Tries to captain Ben Burstow, Roderick Robertson and Jono Graff sealed the famous win over a gutsy, but fading Sharks outfit.

P-Dub speedster Sam Gadsby scored his sides lone try as the North Brisbane representatives made their first final since 2012.

LGM’s Jackson Patton (3) and Jesse Ripley (3) helped guide their side into the finals, while Joey’s top try scorer Corey Pocock also chipped in with three tries.

The South Brisbane Tigers failed to make the finals for the first time in the competition history.

An early 2-2 draw against the Storm was all in vain as the Titans and Sharks ran in 10 tries to sink their finals hopes. It was the Tigers worst defensive performance to date.

New South Wales Blues representative Jacob McMahon lead his side in scoring with two tries.

Toowoomba Storm brought up the rear and performed admirably baring a heavy defeat to the Titans in the final pool game.

Lead by Martin Baldo, the Storm captain ran in three tries to top his side’s points scoring.

Titans mixed secured their second Representative Tournament championship with a fast-finishing 9-4 victory over former mixed titleholders the Sharks.

Boasting a handful of key personnel from their 2018 squad, the Titans ran in six tries to four including three girl tries.

Their path to the finals wasn’t has clear-cut as the mens side.

Two draws in the opening two matches against the Sharks and Tigers aided in their plight to reach the finals.

A 13-2 victory against adversaries the Storm, rubber-stamped their finals spot.

Similarly, the Sharks overcame a gallant Tigers’ side in the final must-win pool game to process to the last dance for the fourth consecutive tournament.

Sam Carmody continued his strong form throughout the day to set up two tries and score two of his own in the final.

Sarah Breydon crossed for two, while the talented Jemma Whitney also scored late to seal the victory.

Early Shark tries to David Cumming and Jake Coolwell were not enough as the Titans overcame the deficit.

Historic LIVIN Legends matches

For the first time the Rep Tournament hosted seperate mens and womens LIVIN Legends matches.

The matches are to create awareness for mental health and depression, while showcasing some of the best players at Kick It.

The Titans and Storm formed the LIVIN Legends Toowoomba side, while the Tigers and Sharks bounded together for Brisbane.

Brisbane Women ran out 3-0 victors over the Toowoomba ladies with two tries to reigning Taringa and Stafford top try scorer Eliza Mooney and Rampage’s Annaleis Tatkovic.

The Toowoomba men faired much better with the boys from the range notching up five tries to one. Beau Hess (2), Ben Burstow Josh Brunner and Alick Gaske all crossed to close out a memorable event.
